According to an AARP study, 90% of seniors would prefer to stay in their homes rather than move to an assisted living facility or nursing home. However, the homes being built now aren't made to grow old in. Less than 4% of single-family homes offer accessibility features such as single-floor living, entrance without steps, and walkways wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers. Properly designed houses can prevent risk of falling which can cause severe injuries.
In 2015, Sarasota County passed the Universal Design and Visitability Program resolution that helps fast track the permitting process. However, not one builder or contractor has applied for the incentive program. It is argued that newer homes should be planned to meet the needs of all people, however, few contractors know or specialize in Universal Design. More education is necessary through education programs and seminars.
Taking a proactive approach is less common but being reactive can be a costly afterthought. While most people want to cross that bridge later it is more cost effective to plan for the inevitable.
